Chicago Hounds Crowned 2026 Major League Rugby Champions

CHICAGO- The perfect season was meant to be. The Chicago Hounds were crowned 2026 Major League Rugby champions on Sunday night after a dominant win over the California Legion, capping off a perfect season and cementing themselves as the most dominant team in the history of Major League Rugby. Despite the poor conditions, with heavy rain falling throughout the night, the Hounds’ offensive power could not be contained.

Flyhalf Chris Hilsenbeck scored 15 points to lead all players on the night with hooker Theo Fourie, flanker Mason Flesch, wing Peyton Wall, and lock Nathan Den Hoedt all adding tries in the winning effort.

The Hounds opened up the scoring with a successful Hilsenbeck penalty goal in the fifth minute. They quickly added onto their lead with a try via hooker Theo Fourie, his league-leading 12th score of the season. Hilsenbeck’s kick was good and the Hounds were up 10-0 after just seven minutes of championship play.

California got on the board minutes before the first-half water break. The Hounds were called for a penalty well within Legion flyhalf Coby Miln’s kicking range. He made it a one-score game with his successful kick.

California was dealt a yellow card to starting tighthead prop Tonga Kofe in the 25th minute. The Hounds quickly capitalized on the man-advantage with Mason Flesch crossing over for his 10th try of the season just a minute later.

California’s replacement prop, who subbed in due to the front-row yellow card to Kofe, got a yellow card of his own in the 32nd minute. The Hounds elected to kick for touch, despite the spot of the foul being in range for a shot at goal. Hilsenbeck’s kick did not find touch and rolled out of the back of the try zone, giving California a scrum from the spot of the kick and their original foul.

California had a good attacking opportunity themselves right before halftime. Chicago won another penalty and kicked for touch. Fourie couldn’t connect on the lineout throw and the ball landed in the arms of a Legion forward. They decided to play from deep in their own end and made a break down the left sideline. After a few kicks ahead that stressed the Chicago defense, the ball trickled into touch.

Despite the halftime scoreline heavily in favor of Chicago, they failed to capitalize on two goal-line opportunities in the first half. Those are the chances teams need to capitalize on in championship ball. Luckily, it didn’t come back to bite them.

Chicago opened up the second half on a tear, scoring a penalty goal and a pair of tries before the second-half water break. Hilsenbeck extended the lead to 20-3 with his second penalty goal of the evening just three minutes into the half. That was followed up with Peyton Wall crossing over for his second try in as many games in the 47th minute. Den Hoedt followed that up with his third try of the season and with a successful conversion, Chicago was up 32-3.

California responded with a try from Coby Miln before the second-half water break. But the Dawgs went into the final quarter with a 32-10 lead that could not be relinquished.

California did apply pressure, however. They came within striking distance after the second-half water break. Flanker Ed Timpson scored another Legion try in the 67th minute. Miln connected on the conversion and it was suddenly 32-17 with just over 10 minutes left to play.

The Hounds defense held strong. They had a chance to put the game out of reach with a lineout close to the line in the 76th minute. The ball was held up and the Legion cleared their line, relieving pressure. Chicago was then awarded a penalty in the 79th minute. Hilsenbeck nailed the kick as time expired and the Hounds were crowned the 2026 Major League Rugby Champions, winning 35-17 and capping off a perfect season.
